There are our female and two male characters. They characterize the range and breadth of gender dynamics in the traditional sexual arena, which I refer to as Beauty and the Beast. All of the females represent different emotions and internal experiences that arise when they are in love. The men, or beasts, express their inability to respond. The fairy tale story of Beauty and the Beast involves a woman who, through her feminine wiles, convinces the Beast to love her. The Beast, in turn, becomes human and can return that love. I present the fallacy of that story. It is a story that women have been taught within the present culture and one that puts them at risk. Within the context of Beauty and the Beast, women relinquish their power to men. They are looking to him for love and fulfillment but end up separate and insatiable because the beast can only be a beast. The paintings are meant to be hung side by side like a triptych, but in a varied fashion. The reason for this is that several of these dynamics can be at play at one time. Hence, the images are interchangeable.
